100 km Course

The course consists of two loops through the Southern Chiemgau. First is a 26 k loop around Rauschberg mountain, followed by a 74 k loop around the Hochfelln massif. The accumulated climbs are about 4400 m (13 200 ft). Large parts of the course employ narrow alpine hiking trails, so you should have a safe step and be free of acrophobia

Starting at the Stadion in Ruhpolding you run on easy terrain via Infang, Froschsee and Schmelz (A) to Zwing (A). From here follow on narrow hiking trail "Alpensteig" (Caution, risks of lethal fall!) up to the Kaitel Alm (K) and further on good forestry roads down to Laubau and back to the Stadion (V,K,A).

The second loop begins with a long climb to the Unternberg saddle via Stockreit, Weingarten, Raffner Alm and up the ski slope or the hiking trail to the saddle next to the Unternberg Alm (K?). The Unternberg summit remains behind to your left. Now you follow the hiking trail via Simandlmais-Alm to the Brander-Alm (bew.). Climb the pasture to the forest and take a left on the bifurcation in the forest to the Ostertal and the meadow just below the Hörndlwand summit (K). Keep on straight and then bear right to soon descend steeply and difficult NW to the beginning of the Wappbach valley. On the bottom keep right (N) on good forestry road to aid station (V,K). Then, after the Röthelmoos Alm (bew.) take the second forestry road left in direction Jochbergalm. Take a forestry road left at 1085 m elevation and another left onto a trail in a right hand bend at 1178 m elevation, leading to the Jochberg-Alm (K,bew.). From here continue on trail up to the Hochsattel saddle and descend the other side to the Grundbach-Alm. Continue on rocky road to the Bischofsfelln-Alm (bew.) and follow N on difficult trail down to a forrestry road, leaving the Hinteralm aside to your left to reach the aid station in the Eschelmoos plain (K,↓66). This aid station you will visit again on k 85 coming from the oposite direction. But for now go left and descend down to Kohlstatt (bew.A,K,V). Here you climb steeply, first on the ski slope to the second forestry road. It leads to the Gleichenberg-Alm (bew.). Keep right and folow narrow path to the Mittelstation (halfway station) of the Hochfelln cable car (bew.). Follow the hiking path and continue on forestry road level until a little ways before the Hocherbalm where you make left onto a trail down through the forrest onto another forestry road which leads you right to Maria Eck (bew.). Follow the road past the stables and then turn right to the aid station (V,A,K). Continue turning right to the Disselbachstube (stone age village) and follow the forestry road, then a trail about level leading towards Ruhpolding Obergschwendt (A) and on a road to Egg (A),(K,V↓80), which must be left before 18:15 if you want to continue on the 100k loop. Until 21:00 you can go for the 80 k shortcut-option from here. The 100 k course follows a hiking trail above the Farnböden-Alm, and to the last big climb to the Hochfelln summit (K, bew.). From the church on the summit turn S through fir bushes steeply and very difficult down and over to the Thorauschneid saddle (1450 m) where you turn W and go down steeply (Caution! Roots, steep precipice to the Weissgraben). Eventually you cross the Weissgraben wash and reach a forestry road which you follow S down to the Eschelmoos-Alm (V,K) and continue on an easy slope down until you can take a forestry road left up, passing to the N of Gründberg and eventually leading unpleasantly steep down to Gruttau (A). Now follow pleasantly rolling forestry roads, trails and backroads to the left of the Urschlauer Aachen creek via Brand (K,bew.) to the Ruhpolding village limits (A). Here in Mühlwinkel you cross the creek and take the backroads to Wasen, Schwaig, Grashof finishing along the Traun river trail to the Stadium (A,V,K).

(bew): restaurant, farm w. food for sale

Marking

The course is marked with white arrows and/or marking tape, esp. on all intersections. These may be missing due to rain, vandals etc. Therefore it is strongly advised that you take a map with you. (e.g. Wanderkarte Chiemgau Nr. 4 of Tourismusverband Chiemgau, Neubert Verlag, available at the start, or topografic map 1:50000 Chiemsee - Chiemgauer Alpen and Berchtesgadener Alpen of Bay. Landesvermessungsamt, or maps from the link maps). You are responsible to find your way even if some markers may be missing.

General information

It is recommended to take a cell phone with you. However, coverage is not complete and sometimes you need to use an Austrian provider

Clothing

The run leads to elevations of 1200-1700 m. Here it may be cold, even in summer- depending on the weather. We recommend you to take a windbraker / rainshell with you. Check the weather forecast and don’t forget sun protection.

Risks

You participate on your own risk in this run, which is held on a not fenced-off and non-surveyed course. Comply with traffic regulations when you cross public roads.

A large number of potentially lethal risks exist in the mountains, so that you should only participate if you consider yourself able to realize and to asses them. So it may become necessary to give up the run or to take a break e.g. in an Alm-hut or other solid building should e.g. powers of nature e.g. extreme weather events call for it.

Possible dangers – without the list beeing complete – are: Vehicular trafic, storm, lightning, falls from precipices and cliffs, slippery rocks and grass on steep slopes, disfunctional trails, mudfows, rock fall, mountain bikers, rabied animals, logging activities, poisonous snakes…. which may lead to injuries including death.
